In the Interior Design world a question one often gets asked is "Are you a Minimalist or Maximalist?" Me personally, I'm a Libra. One misconception about designers is that we impose our taste on you, in fact like a ghost writer we work in "your voice." Far more important than personal taste is experience. We have certainly worked with people who love layers and color as well as spartan designs and near monochromatic schemes. Always ask to see examples of their work and the names of past clients with similar scope projects with whom you can speak. So in summation...Get yourself a designer who can do both!
